SCOLIOSIS PATIENTS RESPOND WELL TO CHIROPRACTIC

The National Scoliosis Foundation estimates six million people in the United States are affected by a curvature of the spine. It is very common to encounter adult patients with varying degrees of spinal curvatures who went undiagnosed as children. Many schools conduct their own scoliosis checks throughout the school year, but the effectiveness of the exam really depends on the skill level of the health care provider performing the tests, and unfortunately, most of the time, these screenings can miss the mildest of cases which can still affect a person the rest of their life. An x-ray will determine the presence of scoliosis, but observing a person’s gait, looking for uneven musculature of the back or any un-leveling of the pelvis or hips, checking for any prominent ribs or shoulder blades and inspecting the spine for any damage, curvature, rotation or misalignment can also be very important. An estimated 85 percent of all cases of scoliosis are considered idiopathic, which has no known cause. Idiopathic scoliosis becomes more readily detectable in children between 10 to 15 years of age with girls eight times more likely than boys to develop a curvature. Both early awareness and an official diagnosis are keys to determining appropriate and timely treatment to slow or prevent the progression of the curvature. Options to remedy the alignment really depend on the severity of the curvature, the person’s age and the spine’s curve pattern. If detected and diagnosed in its early stages, scoliosis can be managed utilizing Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy as well as therapeutic exercises. If anyone was to tell you that they can “reverse” the spinal curvature…RUN! There can be very little to actually correct the curve in your spine, but management can slow the progression, if detected early enough. Remember, the most important aspect of managing a case of scoliosis is to help a structurally dysfunctional spine become perfectly functional throughout all activities throughout your daily life. Although scoliosis is a serious and sometimes debilitating condition, conservative management in the early stages can make a difference.

THE TRUTH ABOUT CALCIUM

Researchers from the Harvard Medical School and University of Connecticut have found that a plant source of calcium has been shown to be more effective in building human bone cells than the most commonly used calcium supplements. The scientists compared the effects of marine algae calcium with calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. The study results showed the algae calcium increased bone mineralization 200 percent and increased bone producing cells 300 to 400 percent more effectively than calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. Until now we thought that all calcium was created equal. Guess there was no big surprise here that a live-harvested plant source of algae calcium is more efficient than milling limestone and marble into indigestible supplements!
